The Roland VariOS is an innovative hardware/software system designed to provide musicians and producers with a flexible and powerful audio production environment. Released in 2003, it combines a 1U rack-mounted module with comprehensive software, enabling real-time audio manipulation and arrangement without taxing your computer’s resources.
At its core, the VariOS offers six-part multi-timbral operation with up to 14 voices of polyphony, allowing for complex and layered audio compositions. Its standout feature, VariPhrase technology, permits independent manipulation of pitch, time, and formant of audio samples, providing unprecedented flexibility in audio editing.
Bundled with the VariOS is the V-Producer software, which facilitates intuitive audio arrangement and editing. This software allows users to batch load and auto-encode .WAV and AIFF files from a computer via USB, and offers a GrooveScope window for non-destructive reconstruction of rhythm loops.
Beyond its sampling capabilities, the VariOS can emulate classic Roland synthesizers. With the VariOS-8 software, it replicates the sounds of the Jupiter-8, offering intuitive on-screen editing. Additionally, the VariOS 303 emulates the iconic TB-303 bass sounds, complete with step sequencing and “Slides.”
The system also includes a comprehensive suite of high-quality effects, such as reverb, chorus, and multi-effects, all processed within the module to prevent CPU drain. Its open-ended design allows for future software updates, ensuring the system evolves with your production needs.
